Mini Travel Drive
Memorex has an interesting lineup with their Travel Drives and this is one such variation of it. It's the Mini Travel Drive and it is U3 enabled. The drives come in four storage sizes, ranging from 256 and 512 MB, to 1 and 2GB and are considered the Mini class. In this case it's the 512 MB version.
The drive itself is very small and made out of a grey hard plastic shell. On the front you can see the storage size conveniently displayed above the corporate M for Memorex. To show activity the drive has a small blue LED light, located at the backend. The cap is translucent and can be used on both ends. One end to secure the cap from loosing it and the other to slip over the USB connector and protect it from outside influences. It doesn't feature a write protect switch. Included in the package are a real paper quick start guide and a long neck strap. Installation is very easy. Just slide the drive in the USB slot and it will install itself. This drive is U3 enabled so it will install 2 drives. One drive enumerated as CD-ROM drive and the other as regular removable storage drive. The CD-ROM drive holds the Launchpad and is about 4 MB big, which is a springboard for the applications on the regular drive, which holds the remainder of the storage size, about 508 MB. Something duly noted about the system specifications is that the drive runs on Windows systems as well as Mac OS and Linux systems. Even Windows 98 SE is supported if you have the proper driver. For the U3 platform there's a different set of specifications. Here you can only use Windows XP/2000 SP4 or higher. The U3 platform simply doesn't support the other operating systems. There are 4 applications included with this U3 drive. Each of these applications show in the Launchpad and these are Migo, Thunderbird, U3 Anti-virus and U3 Welcome. When you read the packaging, there's mention of 4 applications, but I'm missing one they mention and I haven't mentioned yet. It's U-safe, this application is more of an extension to the Launchpad then it is a separate application. It allows you to secure the drive with a password, though use it with caution as it will prohibit backward or cross platform compatibility. Of course you can download and install more application from the U3 Software central. Some of them are free; others are trial based for you to buy after you have tried it.
