I use a SONY DVD RW AW-G170A 1.71 (Ide) DVD drive. Windows XP pro device manager says it is there and it is working properly. DVD copy apps (1click-DVD, copy to DVD and Nero) all can see this device but say I should insert media. So they see the drive but don't see the disc. I have de-installed the IDE drivers and re-installed them. I have installed Patin Couffin v1.37 which I saw mentioned in another thread. Incidentally this problem first came about when I was using an older NEC DVD drive so I used this as an excuse to get a faster drive. So it is unlikely to be hardware. I have used 1clickDVD and Nero successfully for about 2 years and then this problem just seemed to drift in out of nowhere. I use AnyDVD but also recently installed DVD43 as recommended by 1clickDVD. My PC BIOS sees the Sony drive installed on the secondary IDE channel as a master device with nothing else on this channel. I am running Windows XP pro SP2 but can't easily reinstall anything as the CD/DVD drive is totally unuseable. Can anyone help please?!! Richard

Install VSO Inspector, it will tell you what media it supports. Maybe you used a DVD-R and it only burns DVD+R ? Is this a brand new drive you installed yourself ? If yes, is it properly jumpered ? Cable Select / Master / Slave ?

I did install VSO Inspector - the drive supports all the latest media types. Incidentally this problem started with my old drive which I had been using for 2 or 3 years on the same media. So nothing was changed (hardware or media) and the problem just started..... I checked all the ribbon connections inside the PC after putting the new Sony drive in - everything looks fine and I repeat that windows and the software apps can all "see" the drive - they just think there is no disc inside. I have tried DVD, music Cd, data CD and blank CD+DVD - nothing is recognised by any application. VSO Inspector gives all the device features correctly but the media page is blank (lots of N/A).

Hi Pulpf and welcome to our forums Some things you can try to rul them out of the equation: 1. unistall Anydvd and dvd43 to make sure they can be ruled out ( should be easy to reinstall if needed ) 2: Check that alcohol or daemon tools are not installed on your system ( to rule them out ) 3: Please try another media if possible 4: Check to see with VSO inspector ( system tab ) to see if pxhelp is installed ( this can cause issues on some setups ) 5: Make sure windows default ide drivers are installed 6: Goto your C:\programs\copytodvd folder and double click the safe aspi mode reg file 7: Try the hardware in another setup if possible If all of this still does not help, then a log from CopyToDVD would prove useful as I can understand how annoying this is.

Thanks very much SirQUK for helping out - much appreciated. I have uninstalled anyDVD and DVD43. Pxhelp20 is installed as revealed by VSO inspector. How do I get rid of this? I uninstalled IDE devices and then rebooted so windows re-installed drivers. I have run copytoDVD safe aspi mode reg file as you suggested. I have attached what I think is the copytoDVD log file although the dates look strange. Over to you I'm afraid. I rebooted and nothing has changed so far. 17/03/2006 07:29:33 info ********** Report session closed *********** 17/03/2006 07:29:32 info Write completed 17/03/2006 07:29:32 info Average speed x2.36 Reference x1 = 1385.00 kbps 17/03/2006 07:29:32 info Total burning time 00:22:17.860 17/03/2006 07:07:24 info Lead-in burning time (mS) 399 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Starting write buffer 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Starting to write... 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Buffer under-run proof enabled 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Writing speed requested x2.4, effective x2.4 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Writing session #1 and closing disc. 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Open Image file "C:\Documents and Settings\Richard Dawson\Application Data\CopyToDvd\COPYTODVD_03172006_070713_125.cache" 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Required sector size : 2149072 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Available sector size : 2295104 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Available write speed: x2.4 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Media ID: AML-002-00 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Blank or incomplete DVD 17/03/2006 07:07:13 info Detected media $001B: DVD+R 17/03/2006 07:07:11 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:07:09 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:07:07 info Continue button pressed 17/03/2006 07:07:07 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:07:05 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:07:03 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:07:01 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:59 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:58 info Continue button pressed 17/03/2006 07:06:57 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:55 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:53 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:51 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:49 info Drive not ready - Code 02 3A 00 [NOT READY, no CD inserted] 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Initial state - TRAY CLOSED AND NO MEDIA IN DEVICE 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Finished browsing files - Data size 4.1 Gb. 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Start Browsing file structures 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info IDE Controler manufacturer : (Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info IDE Controler Description : Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Supported Media: DVD-R, DVD-RW Seq., DVD-RW RO, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Writing device used: 1:0:0 - _NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A 1.06 [D] (Ide) 17/03/2006 07:06:46 info Using Patin-Couffin driver Version 1.28, Internal revision 28 - Async. This media is known to be hit and miss ( more miss than hit in my experience - infact I would go as far as to say it is very poor media ). 2.

A very old version of PC engine. I would suggest trying an updated version ( we are up to 1.37 ) I know you are using 1Click - are you on the latest version of the software available? As to removing the PXHelp20 -I think 1Click support would be the ones to ask about the best to remove it as I believe 1Click uses this on some of its software ( but so does winamp, Sonic and a few over soft so I can't commit to which software installed it on your system but it is known to do strange things with a lot of Sony/Liteon Drives )

Thanks again. Point taken re the poor media quality, but that is not the underlying problem here. I have removed the low and high filter values using regedit and got rid of pxhelp20 (advice received elsewhere). I updated PC engine to v1.37 but am no further forward. Next I plan to copmpletely re-install XP which is probably way overdue anyway. I have to wait a couple of days for the media to arrive. TYhe PC is working fine in every other respect. This is a weird one alright!

Re-install of windows and a realisation there is definitely a hardware problem with the sony drive fixed this one. Anyhow thanks for all the advice - much of which I am now putting in to practise.
