History: Up until now, I've not had any trouble making data CD's. This is my first attempt at making a Data DVD. Furthermore: Other than an occasional coaster, I also haven't had any trouble using OncClickDVD to burn movies to Double Layer (DL) media (have used both Memorex and Verbatim). What I'm attempting: I am trying to make a backup data disk from DVD (SUSE 10). I only have one DVD drive so I selected it as both the source and destination. CopyToDvd just froze everytime I tried burning this way. So I copied all the folders and files from the DVD to a folder on my HD. CopyToDvd seemed to like this better. When I inserted a Verbatim DL disk into the drive, CopyToDvd seemed to pick up on it as the bottom bar in CopyToDvd showed my burner, plus it displayed that the media was dual layer. After loading all the folder and file names into CopyToDvd, the bottom bar displayed that the files equaled 7.9 GB in size (and the background was green). So I pointed to and selected "Write" on the toolbar and a pop up came up that said: "Initializing Drive" and then another one on top of that said: "Checking re-writable disk" on one line, then the line below it said something, and then finally a line came up saying there wasn't enough space on the media and to please insert the correct media. Media is: Verbatim 8.5GB DVD+R Double Layer -- (not a rewritable!) Drive is: LG GSA 4163B Super Multi - DVDRW (dual layer) / DVD-RAM drive - IDE ( GSA4163BI ) Processor: AMD Athalon 64 3200+ OS: WinXP Pro x64 Any suggestions welcome. TIA, Markus

Hi Markus and welcome to our forums. I spoke to VSO about this and they say that it is worth trying to create an image of the files ( instead of burning directly to dvd ). Then try burning this image and hopefully that should work. The most u can fit to a DL is 7.96 so maybe being so close to that figure + fileset overheads is that little bit too much for data DVD mode. Another possible cause of problems may be out of date firmware but I doubt that is the case. Let us know if the img file works please.

Hmmm. What your saying seems to match my logs (of course, maybe I should find out whose disk SUSE is using to fit all of that onto it without an image.... :-) For fun, here are my logs: 4/26/2006 9:54:42 PM info ******************** Report session closed ********************* 4/26/2006 9:54:39 PM error Write process cancelled during media detection 4/26/2006 9:54:26 PM info Opening tray: media (Dual Layer DVD+R) doesn't have enough free sectors (4174099 required, 4173824 Available, 550 Kb. missing) 4/26/2006 9:53:59 PM info Continue button pressed 4/26/2006 9:53:58 PM info Continue button pressed 4/26/2006 9:53:55 PM info Continue button pressed 4/26/2006 9:53:54 PM info Continue button pressed 4/26/2006 9:53:53 PM info Opening tray: media (Dual Layer DVD+R) doesn't have enough free sectors (4174099 required, 4173824 Available, 550 Kb. missing) 4/26/2006 9:53:16 PM info Continue button pressed 4/26/2006 9:53:13 PM info Opening tray: media (Dual Layer DVD+R) doesn't have enough free sectors (4174099 required, 4173824 Available, 550 Kb. missing) 4/26/2006 9:52:04 PM info Media has been found ready but media test has failed. Hi there,
Quote:
4/26/2006 9:51:59 PM info Writing device used : 1:1:0 - HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B A101 [H] (Ide)
Get the latest firmware for your burner. http://lgodd.lge.com/fwdrv/DVD-WRITER/GSA4163A106.exe You have A101, and the latest is A106, you are 5 versions behind. Firmware updates are important these days, specialy when dealing with Dual Layer media.
Quote:
DVD+R DL or called DVD+R9 is a Dual Layer writeable DVD+R. The dual layered discs can hold 7.95 GB or around 8 540 000 000 bytes
From your LOG:
Quote:
4/26/2006 9:52:00 PM info Opening tray: media (Dual Layer DVD+R) doesn't have enough free sectors (4174099 required, 4173824 Available, 550 Kb. missing) 4/26/2006 9:52:00 PM info Finished browsing files - Data size 7.95 Gb.
You are pushing it to the limit ! I strongly suggest not to write so close to the edge of a media. Single Layer can cold 4485mb, most of us suggest never to cross 4300mb or 4400mb at the most if you have too. And that is on good quality media.
Quote:
DVD-5 is a single sided single layer DVD that stores up to about 4.7 GB = 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.38 computer GigaBytes where 1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes(4 700 000 000B/1024 = about 4 589 843KB/1024 = about 4485MB/1024 = about 4.38GB)
So I guess with Dual Layer, I suggest you don't cross 7.8Gb My 2 cents...

Thank you both SirQUK and Tabby. I will upgrade the firmware as suggested and write down your suggested MAX file/image size for burning to DL. I also re-read my own logs (for comprehesion this time...) that you quoted: ".... media (Dual Layer DVD+R) doesn't have enough free sectors (4174099 required, 4173824 Available, 550 Kb. missing)." Wow I says to myself, just get rid of a few MB's and I should be good. Since I'm the only one going to use this copy, and I only speak English (I'm sure you'll forgive me :), I got rid of about 80 mb of non-english man-pages (help documents). And whala! I was right at 7.8GB and it burned (just as you said it would....). Again, thanks! Markus

I too have found that just like H.D. now days a 80g HD.holds about 73+or-g .so too are dvds they never hold the stated amount due to 2 different methods of stating capacity.which are both correct, yet they cause problems with people who are un-aware of this,Burn away lad it seems the gents in here solved your problem!!
