i use dvd shrink. could someone please tell me when compressing dvd's at what percentage do you start to lose picture quality. i love to have menu's and everything, but on dvd's the average rate i get when using shrink averages 55%, so i reauthor and just get the movie only. i've read 75 % and above, i prefer 85-100%. any help? thanks

Thats a good question Most action movies are already compressed at around 70-90% to fit on a DVD ROM. So You have already lost a lot of quality from the original master! That said, I would say that most transcoding sodtware such as DVD Shrink starts to lose quality at around 20% compression. I certainly wouldn't use a transcoder on anything that requires over 40% compression either if it contains high motion video. For good quality at high compression you really need a re encoding software which is usually a lot dearer. A few free encoders exist but the best one I have found is Cinema Craft Encoder ( basic verison is $39 ).

about the re encoding. here is my situation. i have decrypted skeleton key. results for full movie with the foreign subtiltles and all audio except 5.1 stripped leave me with a 54.3% compression, the extras and menus both at 66%. when i re author just the movie and maybe deleted scenes i can get the compression rate to about 90% minus the audio and subtitles(a better quality pic in my opinion). when exactly does the re encoding come into play and would it do much to improve the picture quality of the full disc at 65%. i burned one movie at about a 55% compression rate and it looked pixelated from time to time. should i just stick to re authoring to maintain pic quality? thanks

If I can throw in my two cents, as SirQUK says CCE basic encoder for $39 is the best considering there full blown program is several thousand dollars. You can use CCE with DVD Rebuilder (freeware) which is also bundle with several encoders one which I use a lot and that is HC015 encoder. This is all freeware stuff. You also have the alternative of using DVDRemake Pro and split your DVD onto 2 disks and not half to worry with a encoder. Food for thought! Cheers
