Editing DV tape and burning to CD, or DVD sacrifices video quality, ..burning back to D tape does not; Is this normal? I hope that this is asked on the right forum, I am not up on all the alphabet soup.

it all depends on your source size and video settings....normally if you reenode dv to dvd , theres not a lot of loss in quality... I have never recorded to digital tape so i cannot comment on that one....if you reencode to svcd , then there will be a noticeable difference in quality..... I do know that the dual layer dvdr that is being released later this year will mean that you can put your dv onto dvd with no loss at all as it holds upto 9GB of storage.

You will lose some quality converting dv to dvd as dv is roughly 13g/b an hour whereas dvd will hold about an hour on a 4.7g disc, but the quality loss is not noticeable on the telly or computer monitor. Your best bet is to edit your dv and record it back to dv tape and keep this edited version as the master(you can then blank the original tapes used) and also burn to dvd for use in stand alone players. Hope this helps.
