what happens/how-to continue write to same DVD

I have a library of source code on d:\mycode\c initially, I just opened explorer, inserted a blank dvd and clicked on "CopyToDVD" in explorer and the folder was written to the dvd no problem, good so far now, I wanted to update the same folder, so I inserted the same dvd, opened explorer and navigated to d:\mycode\c and clicked CopyToDVD it launched just fine, wrote something for about a minute and then completed, all normal based on the small interactive detail window when I browse the dvd, none of the updated files are there? just what did it do, what did I just do? was I supposed to first create new temp foldername and first copy the new files there and only *then* proceed with the write to dvd? if not, what then?
