Copttodvd looked intresting so I downloaded the trial software. It worked good but I mainly just use the DVDs for backing up (using windows XP explorer, copy/paste). So I did not think about the copytodvd software. Well I went to back up my maps yesterday putting a brand new DVD-R into my drive. The drive said DVD-RW drive until i put the blank DVD in, then it switched to say CD drive, incorect function. (giving me a media error) I thought, hmmm maybe a bad CD so I pulled another off the spindle (This is a 50 DVD-R spindle that until now I had no problem with any of the media, making 12 back-ups so far). When I ejected the disk the drive swithched back to say DVD-RW drive. Put the new blank DVD-r in and as soon as it saw that it was a blank disk the drive switched to CD drive error incorrect function. This is only a 6 month drive so I took a dvd movie and put it in, not only did the drive stay listed as a dvd-rw drive but it played the movie. I then put one of the burned DVD backups in, Again the drive worked normally and stayed listed as a DVD-rw drive. So I opened a new spindle of verbatim DVD-RW and tried several. Whenever a blank DVD-rw is put into the drive the drive switches to an unreadable device. I started looking at all the software and the only DVD burn software on my system was Copytodvd and dvxtodvd. When I checked the copytodvd I got this message: ====================== This software is not free, but you can try it for free Trial period is over since 6 days ======================== Ok, so VSO had modifed my drive so I could not burn anything without paying for the copytodvd software. An unorthdox copy protection scheme but ok I thought, no prob I will just uninstal the software since i did not use it any way. so I uninstalled all of the VSO programs...... WTH.... My drive still goes to CD drive and if I right click on it shows the option "copytodvd" What am I supposed to BUY software I do not need just to be able to access my own drive>? Is it a HABIT of VSO to BLACKMAIL people to buy there software or loose access to their DVD-RW drives>? Look at the forum, everyone having a problem whith there drives not reading media try this. Go to windows explorer and look at the drive. The put a burned DVD in and look at the drive, then try a blank DVD and watch how the drive is being modified by VSO.

The suggestion was made that my problem was in the OS. So I pulled the drive and stuck it in one of my other systems. On the other system the drive worked perfictly, I was able to copy and paste from win explorer. Now lets examine this, I have a home lan setup with a 5 port wired/wireless router and a 12 port hub. In the game room where this system sits I have 3 other systems all running Windows XP professional. All are set to automatically update windows. The other 3 systems are identical systems Athlon 1.2 ghz systems, Nividia 5200, etc.. This system is newer a 3.2 ghz system. Software wise they all have the same Operating system win xp pro, they all have the same games, same versions of office etc... The only diffrence was that I had installed copytodvd on this system. The other systems only have cd-w/dvd-rom combo drives and this one had a toshiba SD-R5272 DVD-RW besides the cd-w/dvd. Point being that all the windows have the exact same updates so if it was the opperating system then the DVD-RW should not work on the other system. OH and I did get the latest firmware for the drive, there is no driver because the toshiba SD-R5272 is native to WIN XP. So if the drive work and tests normally (on the other system) and the firmware is up to date and on this systems the drive reads, seeks pre-burned DVDs normally and the media has no problem on the other system, so the only problem is that on this system where copytodvd was installed will not allow any blank DVDs.... What am a missing? The drive works, The OS works, Whats left? Question

vso doesn't modify drive. your post is too long for me to read and full of border-line assertion. you should rather send the error message, it would have make more sense....
