| At the home page, VSO announces that the latest version of CopyToDVD will now burn DVD-R DL disks. My question is whether CopyToDVD will burn DVD+R DL disks. It seems that hardware drives are either one or the other. My preference is to purchase a Sony drive but their burner is for DVD+R media.

| Hi Intertracker and welcome to our forums. CopyToDVD supports DVD+R D/L perfectly in my experience as long as the media is good.

I'd appreciate your clarifying 'good media.' I use Memorex as a rule for burning DVD+RW and ħR and found their disks very reliable especially the rewritable. I now avoid unbranded disks because I've encountered playback problems with both RW and R, namely jitter and pixellation. Also I don't use DVD-RW disks because I've encountered problems with that format and my existing Sony single layer burner even though I've kept the drive's firmware up to date. Made too many coasters!

| What sony model do you have. I can confirm sonys normally like Taiyo Yuden/Verbatim/Traxdata/Maxell/Ricoh and Moes Baer India media. Your sony is mnore than likely a rebadged liteon. Have a loojk at our media reviews section where I use my Liteon a lot and get some good/bad results dependant on media.

| It's a Sony DRU-500A and it's the first I've heard that it could be a Lite-On in disguise but then nothing much surprises me in this field. It's always worked very well. Checking the Memorex disks I use with a manufacturer ID utility reveals that they're made by Ricoh but I'll check the media review as you sugest. I'm currently in the market for a dual layer burner. I've always bought Sony burners before (made by Sony or otherwise!) but this time I'm thinking of a Plextor PX-716A. More expensive than most but I've been reading good things about that particular model.

I have a plex 716 to use for new media reviews coming up and i can tell you it is nice with verbatim d/L media. With the power rec feature on I got a max speed of 6x for layer 0 and 4x for layer 1 making a fully readable disc in only 23 minutes. Remember this is 2.4x rated media!

Doesn't like my present batch of Ritek D/L though. Refused to write past 75%.

| Your tests show that media are still a problem when burning certain manufacturer's disks with certain burners. And that doesn't start to address the problem that players have with certain burnt brands. You're OK if everything is confined to your own equipment but milage can definitely vary I've found when others try to play disks you've burnt for them. Seems there's quite ways to go before we have the reliability and predictability of, say, the humble floppy disk.

| The D/L compat issue is only apparent it seems if the booktype is not changed to DVD-ROM Even my fusiest of players ( and i have some fussy ones i can tell you!) will play them with the booktype changed. But yes, we are still a few months away from widespreaduse of D/L media The error on the Ritek D/L points to the media itself and not the hardware, so I am really happy with the plex and D/L. We also get faster D/L very shortly which should overspeed better.

| Well, that's a good endorsement for the Plextor drive. I've learned since the beginning of this topic that Plextor makes a serial ATA interface version of this drive and since I'm just about to upgrade my motherboard to include serial ATA, I think that that and your ringing endorsement has persuaded me that that's the drive to go for. Many thanks for all the information and tips.
